Son of NY federal judge accused of secretly recording women in sex acts

The son of a prominent New York federal judge has been accused of surreptitiously recording women engaged in sex acts in his Manhattan home.

Daniel McAvoy, 49, is facing dozens of felony counts of unlawful surveillance after he allegedly made secret sex tapes of four women over the course of four years, both at his current residence and a former one.

The recordings were cataloged on more than 100 DVDs — annotated with explicit, hand-written notes like “[redacted] wants an afternoon quickie,” “[redacted] wants to watch,” and [redacted] anal,” according to court evidence records.

The DVDs were retrieved from an upstate address linked to McAvoy’s father, US District Judge for the Northern District of New York Thomas McAvoy, according to the documents, first reported by Gothamist Monday.

Police also retrieved multiple hard drives and camcorders from McAvoy’s Upper East Side home.

The elder McAvoy, first appointed to the bench by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, has not been accused of wrongdoing. He did not return a request for comment from The Post Monday.

Isabell Kirshner, an attorney for Daniel McAvoy, declined to comment.

McAvoy was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury Sept. 7 on 29 counts of unlawful surveillance in the second degree, a class-E felony in which a video is made secretly with the intent to provide sexual arousal or sexual gratification.

He has pleaded not guilty, and was released under supervision and required to turn over his passport. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.

His attorney rejected an offer of a plea deal that would have seen McAvoy serving one to three years in prison and would have required him to register as a sex offender, a source with knowledge of the proceedings told The Post.

Emily Tutttle, a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, said the investigation into McAvoy was ongoing, and encouraged any other victims to call the office’s sex crimes hotline.

McAvoy is due back in court on December 1.
