Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) was slammed on social media after releasing a shocking campaign commercial that portrays a woman being arrested in front of her family for having an abortion.

The ad, which implored voters to support Democrats in next month’s midterm elections, shows police officers informing the woman — in front of her husband and two kids — that there is a warrant out for her arrest over an unlawful abortion. The situation quickly escalates and the cops draw their weapons on the family and handcuff the woman in front of her screaming children.

“MAGA Republicans want women arrested for having an abortion. This is what that looks like.  #LockHerUp,” Swalwell said in a tweet accompanying the video.

Like Swalwell’s tweet, the ad warns that “elections have consequences,” and urges people to “vote Democrat” on Election Day to “stop Republicans from criminalizing abortion everywhere.”

The messaging that Republicans want to lock up women who have abortions was not well received by conservatives on Twitter.

The messaging that Republicans want to lock up women who have abortions was not well received by conservatives on Twitter.

“The only take away I get from this is Eric Swalwell has an incredibly insulting, despicable, hateful view of law enforcement,” conservative radio talk show host Larry O’Connor said, adding that “Eric Swalwell is a garbage human being.”

“I don’t think there is a single Republican candidate running for national office that has suggested arresting women for having abortions. Oh well. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!” pointed out Ben Kew, an editor at El American, a bilingual conservative media platform.

“Still waiting for Eric Swalwell to be investigated over his relationship with Chinese spy Fang Fang,” Brigitte Gabriel, founder of the grassroots organization ACT For America, said in response to the video, referring to Swalwell’s relationship with a suspected Chinese spy.

Democrats have tried to make the Supreme Court’s June decision overturning Roe v. Wade a central issue in the Nov. 8 elections, but most of the public doesn’t seem to be playing along.

Swalwell is running for re-election in California’s 14th Congressional District, a safe Democratic seat. His opponent, Republican Alison Hayden, lost to Swalwell in 2020 by a margin of more than 40 percentage points.

A New York Times/Siena College poll released Monday, found that just 5% of likely voters believe abortion is the most important issue facing the country. By contrast, 26% of likely voters said the economy was the most important issue, while another 18% said decades-high inflation was most on their minds.
