CBD for Senior Citizens

With the rise in popularity of CBD (cannabidiol), it is natural to wonder how it could positively impact the lives of seniors. CBD for senior citizens has several important potential applications that can be beneficial. More research is still needed on nearly every aspect of CBD, but between early research and anecdotal evidence, it shows a great deal of promise.

Note: CBD is not intended to cure or treat any disease or ailment. Since CBD is still under extensive research and is yet to be FDA approved, these testimonials can give you a better insight into the benefits of CBD oil, but they are by no means as credible as, for example, clinical research, which is lacking at the moment.

Some of the important considerations about CBD for senior citizens can be found below:

Pain Management: CBD might have potential to help with pain management. A study in rats showed that CBD has the potential to dramatically reduce chronic neuropathic and inflammatory pain. One study on rats even found that when used over time, CBD may positively influence how the brain responds to and perceives pain.

Managing Cancer-Related Symptoms:  The risk of cancer increases with age, and 60 percent of new cancer diagnoses are seniors. Chemotherapy is a common and typically effective treatment for cancer, but it has many negative side effects, including nausea and vomiting. This adds to the pain associated with cancer for most senior patients. CBD also has potential for treating nausea and vomiting, since CBD and CBG are often capable of helping with nausea.

Alzheimer’s Disease Management: Early research using mice that have Alzheimer’s disease indicates that CBD has the potential to provide neuroprotective effects against Alzheimer’s. This research further suggests that it may be able to help reverse Alzheimer’s-related cognitive decline and reduce neuroinflammation. This has not been substantiated in humans yet, but the research is ongoing. We hope that CBD for seniors can help in this aspect as well.

Other Potential Uses for Seniors: In addition to the above potential ways that CBD can help seniors, it may also assist with reducing the following problems. Some of these are more common than others in seniors.

Anxiety: Research focused on seniors over 70 years old who suffer from sleep problems and anxiety found that anxiety scores dropped for almost 80 percent of participants after using CBD for a month. While this research is early and needs more proof, it is promising.

Insomnia: Forty to 50 percent of seniors suffer from disturbed sleep or insomnia. Sleep is one of the most common uses of CBD.

What Seniors Should Keep in Mind

It is important that any seniors considering taking CBD remember that not everyone has the same reactions to it and that research is still in the early stages. It is also important to confirm that CBD will not interact with any of your medications before starting to take it.
