When you got promoted into your Leadership position, did they provide you with a safety helmet, fireproof jacket, axe and a fire hose?   Do you think they should have?

Does it seem to you, like it does to us, that you spend way too much time putting out fires?  Troubleshooting and trouble-fixing seem to occupy way too much time for anyone in a retail leadership position these days.

It’s not that you don’t know how to do your job.  You could likely argue that most of the people you’re supposed to be leading know how to do their jobs too.  Yet, consider this list of things that routinely break down in the stores:

  • Programs aren’t executed the way they’re designed
  • Standards aren’t complied with
  • Service levels aren’t consistently met
  • Staff turnover is out of control
  • Key metrics are below expectations
  • Engagement levels are much too low
  • Results aren’t being met

The ‘fix’ isn’t to becoming better at ‘managing’ in most cases.  The solution is becoming a better Leader.

That’s why I’m personally inviting you and your team to attend our  amazing 2-Day Retail Leadership Summit  in Toronto this coming September 2022.   The program has received incredible reviews from everyone that has attended.  Everyone that attends grows into a true Leader and becomes the Leader their stores need.

This really is the missing piece in the development of most District Managers, Regional Managers, Directors and even VPs.  Learning how to influence, engage, inspire and move your teams will be the greatest addition to your skillset as a Leader.

We’ll even save you $300 if you sign up today.  A great savings.  Combined with the money you’ll make from selling off all that firefighting equipment you’ll no longer need it’s an easy decision!  Don’t wait though … the discount offer expires on July 22.

If you’re tired of fighting fires, and are ready to create sustainable results, then sign up today for our Retail Leadership Summit.

You can download the program brochure here that will show you how we will turn your managers at all levels into true Leaders.

Then make the decision to become the Leader your teams need and sign up today.  Limited spots, so don’t be disappointed.

How can we increase sales during COVID-19? I’ve been asked this over and over again by retailers. The answer is simple…it’s your staff!

I recently talked about optimizing the sales floor experience before and during the COVID crisis on the Voice of Retail Podcast.

Pre-COVID Retail Strategy

We need to remember that pre-COVID, retail stores were facing the challenge of decreasing traffic count. This meant that retailers had to boost their conversion rates to maintain or increase sales. At Graff Retail, we focused our training efforts on helping our clients get more out of those customers that were visiting their stores, becoming more effective at uncovering their needs, and closing sales. Consumers had grown accustomed to shopping experiences built around their individual needs and desires. With online flourishing and increased competition, stores had to ensure that the performance of their frontline staff would rise to meet growing customer expectations.

Getting staff members to be better brand ambassadors was a strategy that we found was working for retail stores. Retail stores that were focusing on their staff knowing about products and learning to engage with customers were seeing high-performance levels. Best Buy is a great example of this. Despite a surge in online purchases for electronics, Best Buy has continued to grow. They knew their staff was their greatest differentiator and decided to invest in them.

Post-COVID Retail Strategy

Post-COVID, the retail landscape has changed drastically, but most of the basic principles for increasing sales remain the same, although there should be more of an emphasis on them now. First, let’s talk about what’s changed.

Retail stores now need to concentrate on communicating their safety strategy to both their staff and customers. Customers and staff are anxious and they need to know you’re working through all the safety procedures. You can read more about the importance of safety during COVID here. Next, make sure you are giving customers everything that they need. Keep in mind your customers don’t want to make a second or third trip back to the store.

What hasn’t changed is the need to create exceptional customer experiences. Let’s face it, the shopping experience isn’t great, so you need to double down and work harder to engage with customers. There needs to be a sense of urgency among your staff. There is limited time and customers, so you need to maximize the value of every customer. This holiday season, make sure your team has a solid add-on strategy and is selling to everyone possible on a customer’s list. My 5-step add-on strategy can help you sell one or two additional items along the way.

I can not emphasize enough the true value that your staff brings to your brand. Start investing in your team and get them the support they need. Retailers that invest in their staff properly, see the rewards over and over again. Your staff is going to bring your brand to life. They are the differentiating factor!

Contact us today and get your staff the training they need and deserve.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the multiple shutdowns have created financial stress for so many. That, combined with fears for our health, has resulted in so much psychological stress for most everyone. Never before has protecting our mental health been this important.

Let’s get this out of the way right upfront … I’m not a mental health professional! Truth is, I’ve even struggled with my own mental health at times. Maybe that’s why I’m so passionate about doing everything we can to protect our mental health and opted to first publish this blog in March 2020, however, it is just as relevant today.

Here are 7 things that have worked for me:

Self-Care
Your family needs you. Your work needs you. You get pulled in a lot of directions. But you need you too. Find the time every day to do something special for yourself. Create your own little ritual that’s just for you. For me, when I’m at my little shack in the woods, that means playing some vinyl records while sipping a great scotch for an hour or two. For my wife, it’s the beautiful ritual of soaking in the tub each night, headphones on listening to music.

Vision
It’s not where you are now. It’s where you’re headed. What’s your vision of where you want to be in the future? Write it down. Do a collage maybe. Post it where you’ll see it every day. Spending a few minutes every day focusing on where you’re going to be in the future often gives better context to the present (and let’s be honest, the present kind of sucks!)

Goals
Finding progress and success every day does wonders for the mind. Have a couple of short-term goals to accomplish every day. Maybe it’s a home project. Maybe it’s cleaning the garage. Start each day with a goal or two and accomplish them. For me, one of my goals during this period is to connect with a minimum of 3 people every day…clients, family, friends…who are important to me and that I care about. Remember, we are all hard-wired for connection. The sense of progress helps so much.

Personal Development
Fire up your mind by learning something new. After all, we all have a bit more time on our hands right now. It’s amazing how my mind gets refreshed every time I dig into learning. Reading, listening to audiobooks, podcasts, documentaries…there’s no shortage of things you can do. Currently, I’m reading Dare to Lead by Brene Brown. Amazing read. Give Netflix a break for a couple of hours every day.For those who have access to our online Get Selling and/or Get Managing programs, now may the time to dig in. Your mind will love you for it.

Exercise
I probably false-started 100 times on getting a daily workout routine going. I thought I was going to get back into fitness for the benefits to my body (if you know me, you know mine needs it!)What I discovered is that the benefits to my mental health dwarfed the physical benefits. Stress goes down, focus improves and confidence skyrockets. No matter what you do, just do something physical every day.

Meditate
I wish I would have invested in a meditation app before this crisis hit! From all accounts, thousands of people are discovering the benefits of daily meditation. I’m a bit of a rookie at it, but I can attest to the immense value of disconnecting so that you can self-connect. 10 minutes a day. Maybe more. Calm. Peace. Clarity. Find a meditation app and give it a try.

Gratitude
This one may be the most important, albeit the most difficult for many right now. It’s pretty scary out there. There’s loss. There’s fear. There’s uncertainty. It’s far from perfect these days. Yet, look around you and you’ll see amazing things all around you to be grateful for. Maybe start a gratitude journal. Or, just begin and end each day thinking about 3 things you’re thankful for.

I’m typically a very positive person, but when times go bad for too long, I can often forget to have an attitude of gratitude. By beginning to remember all the big and little things I should be grateful for, it makes it easier to see the sun shining brightly each day.

Writing this was way outside my usual comfort boundaries. I’m typically ranting at you to sell more, manage better, be a better retailer. It just seemed to me that given the circumstances of today, our mental health is far more important than trying to improve your Average Sale results.

We’ll all get through this. Together. And with strong and healthy minds.
