At least 22 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruits were injured, including five critically, after a vehicle plowed into them while they were out on a training run early Wednesday, authorities said.

The recruits were out running along Mills Avenue in Whittier just before 6.30 a.m. when the horrific crash unfolded. 

In addition to the critically injured, four recruits suffered moderate injuries and 14 others were left with minor injuries, according to the LA County Fire Department.

Multiple victims were rushed to local area hospitals, while others were treated in the middle of the street.

Footage from the scene showed debris was strewn across the road and a heavily damaged SUV on the sidewalk near a downed light pole.

The driver, who was also injured in the crash, was taken into custody at the scene, authorities said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the wreck.

“We do not have a cause,” Fire Department spokesperson, Capt. Sheila Kelliher, said.

“We do not have any other information on how the driver lost control, so at this time that is the basic information that we can share with you.”

The incident unfolded just over a mile from the LASD Star Center, which is where recruits undergo training.
